Scopello and the Pane Cunzato
Scopello and the Pane Cunzato

Overlooking an enchanted bay, the small hamlet of Scopello has about 80 inhabitants and is 10 km from Castellammare del Golfo, a town in the province of Trapani. The village is made up of a very small cluster of houses, all adjacent to the Baglio dating back to the 17th century. The Baglio represents the central and most important structure of Scopello, closed on 4 sides and with an arched entrance. Today inside there are bars, restaurants and small souvenir shops all "protected" by a large oak placed in the center of the courtyard.

What to do in Scopello

Scopello has seafaring origins and undoubtedly the main economic activity was fishing, mainly tuna fishing. The tonnara is the most famous place, dating back to the 13th century, over the years it met more owner families who expanded or modified it according to their needs. The tonnara remained active until 1981 with the Florio family, today it is possible to learn about the history and admire it thanks to guided tours. In front of the Tonnara bathed by turquoise waters, three rocky massifs dominate, the Faraglioni of Scopello which with pride and majestic beauty almost seem to protect the Tonnara. It should also be noted that the herring gull lives and nests on their rocky walls full of vegetation. Scopello is also one of the two gateways to the Zingaro Oriented Nature Reserve, 7km of pristine coastline that extends up to San Vito Lo Capo. There are many paths rich in flora and fauna that will take you between caves and wonderful beaches. What else to do? Well we are in Sicily and in Sicily we know, we eat, always!
